Craig Melvin recently stepped away during a recent broadcast on Today, leaving in-between frames. At the time, his co-workers helped explain what was going on. Notably, this isn’t the only time one of the Today co-hosts had to step away this week.
Craig Melvin Has Had A Number Of Roles On Today Over The Years
Melvin officially joined Today back in August 2018. He served as a co-anchor during the first and second hours alongside Savannah Guthrie, starting this role in early 2025 after Hoda Kotb’s exit. He also co-hosts the program’s Third Hour.
In addition, Craig Melvin has had a few other ventures to his name. Earlier this year, for example, he introduced a new podcast series, Glass Half Full with Craig Melvin.
During the September 25 broadcast of Today, during the opening of the Third Hour, Melvin informed viewers that he had dealt with a busy few days. He shared, “It’s been a long week.” Dylan Dreyer then asked, “Are you ok?”
Dylan and Al Roker then teamed up for their weather handoff, with Craig surprisingly missing from the frame. After the segment, Roker shared that Melvin had stepped away to deal with a few personal matters.
Al Roker Previously Talked About How The Today Crew Often Step In For & Help Each Other
According to Roker, “It gave you a break to go over and do some other things.” Melvin was later able to make his return, adding that he “checked my mail” during the break.
Speaking with Hello! Magazine, Roker previously expressed how the co-hosts of Today have often stepped in to help each other over the years. As he noted, “The great thing about the Today Show is that the sum is greater than its equal parts. They’ve all subbed, they’ve all stepped in, and we don’t miss a beat. So no matter what happens, we’re going to be in great shape.”
Roker continued, “Each one of us is very fortunate to be in this position, for however long we have, and then we pass the baton off to somebody else. So the future of the show is just as strong and bright no matter who steps in.”
As previously reported, Roker himself also recently saw his co-hosts help him when he stepped away during a broadcast this week. Disappearing after a few early segments, midway through the morning news program, Dylan Dreyer appeared to take over weather duties, with Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin saying that he was on assignment.
Melvin and Dylan also recently stepped away from the studio just last week. At the time, the two were attending Melvin’s annual Bottoms Up Invitational golf tournament, which serves as a fundraiser for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
