When Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender was released in February 2024, it soared to the top of the streamer’s TV lists. According to Netflix, the live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series recorded 41.1 million views in its first 11 days. Roughly two weeks after the show’s premiere, the streamer announced the news that all Benders were waiting for: Gordon Cormier’s Aang — and his friends and enemies — will be returning for a second and third season.
In addition to Cormier, the live-action adaptation stars Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Of course, we can’t forget Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, who, along with Elizabeth Yu’s Azula, is introduced earlier in Netflix’s version of the story.
Like the original, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang, the avatar who possesses the unique ability to “bend” all four elements: air, earth, fire, and water. He is the key to saving the world from the Fire Nation’s domination, a responsibility Aang struggles with since he is literally a child. Plus, he was trapped in an iceberg for 100 years and missed the Fire Nation starting a war against the the Earth Kingdom, the Water Tribe, and his own people, the Air Nomads.
Netflix officially renewed Avatar: The Last Airbender for Seasons 2 and 3 in March 2024, just a few weeks after Season 1 dropped. And it sounds like the plan is for Season 3 to be the last for the live-action series. In a statement, the streamer said, “The live-action reimagining of the beloved animated series will return with a second and third season to conclude the epic story as the four nations unite — Water. Earth. Fire. Air. — to bring The Legend of Aang to its proper conclusion.”

Here’s the full, and possibly last, trailer we’ll get for Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s a doozy.
The video announcing the season premiere date teases what’s to come in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2. In addition to the main cast talking about their excitement — “Now that we’re past Season 1, we’re into the real meat of the story,” Dallas Liu says — the video features a timelapse of Ba Sing Se being built.
A teaser for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 was released in December 2025, and there are some exciting reveals. First, viewers get a first look at Miyako’s Toph, the earthbender who is going to join the crew currently consisting of Aang, Katara, and Sokka. We also see those three characters return, and it’s clear that Aang has had the greatest transformation since Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1. The actor who plays him, Gordon Cormier, is now in his late teens, and the character looks very different from the boy who was freed from the iceberg in the show’s premiere.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 cast
In May 2025, Netflix shared the casting of new actors in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2. Terry Chen is set to play Jeong Jeong, Dolly de Leon will play Lo and Li, and Lily Gao will play Ursa. They will be joined by Madison Hu as Fei and Dichen Lachman as Yangchen.
But that’s not all. Netflix also revealed two cast members who are joining Season 3. Jon Jon Briones has been cast as Piandao, alongside Tantoo Cardinal as Hama.
Previously, Netflix unveiled new members of the Earth Kingdom in November 2024. Chin Han will be playing Long Feng, Hoa Xuande will be playing Professor Zei, Justin Chien will be playing King Kuei, and Amanda Zhou will be playing Joo Dee. They are joined by Crystal Yu as Lady Beifong, Kelemete Misipeka as The Boulder, Lourdes Faberes as General Sung, and Rekha Sharma as Amita.
In September 2024, at Geeked Week Live, Netflix announced the long-awaited casting of fan-favorite character Toph, who will be played by Miyako. Toph is a master earthbender who is blind and who becomes an integral part of Aang and his friends’ group.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 ending
Avatar ended its first season with two crucial scenes. One was Azula’s conquering of Omashu, which Season 1 showrunner Albert Kim called “the true ending of the story” for this first part. “To me, the bookends of the season were Fire Lord Sozin’s attack on the Southern Air Temple, which was a result of misdirection: He tells the world he’s going after the Earth Kingdom, and instead he goes after the Southern Air Temple,” Kim told TV Guide. “And then the same thing happens at the end of our season, which is Fire Lord Ozai uses misdirection to conquer Omashu.”
That scene was followed by the Great Sage telling Ozai about the return of Sozin’s Comet. “I don’t think that final scene was in mind from the beginning, it came about a little bit later,” Kim explained in the same interview. “In fact, I always intended it to be one of those Marvel after-credits scenes. If you saw it, cool. If you didn’t, it didn’t detract from your sense of the story.” Kim added that fans of the original series know that Sozin’s Comet is like “the ticking clock” — its return means the enhancement of Firebenders’ power. “We set it up almost like a little bit of an Easter egg at the very end. That is the threat,” Kim said. “But we don’t give a specific timeframe to it.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 behind the scenes
In April 2024, Variety reported that Albert Kim, the showrunner of the first season, was stepping down from his role. According to Variety, “Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on Last Airbender and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the Percy Jackson series while also developing new projects for that company.”
Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani are going to lead the series going forward. Boylan was a co-executive producer on Avatar‘s first season, and Raisani was an executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor.
“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2,” Boylan and Raisani told Tudum when production on Season 2 kicked off. “We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t.”
In May 2025, Netflix announced that production had wrapped on Season 2 and moved on to Season 3.
