Back in 2019, legendary director Quentin Tarantino unleashed his revisionist, Californian fairy tale Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie became an instant classic. Spearheaded by Leonardo DiCaprio as fading actor Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt as his tough, stoic stunt-man Cliff Booth, the movie chronicles their up-and-down journey as they work to recapture fame and success in the harsh, rapidly-changing film industry in 1960s Los Angeles. It’s a film about friendship, fragile careers, and chasing shadows.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was a monumental success, receiving 10 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, winning 2 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Production Design. At the box office, it grossed $393.9 million worldwide against a production budget of $90 million. It’s Quentin Tarantino’s second biggest movie at the box office, behind Django Unchained (2012).

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth: Plot, Logline, & First Look
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth takes place in California in 1977, eight years after the events of the original movie, at a time when Hollywood was seeing the dawn of modern blockbusters. The film follows Booth, now long retired from his stunt-work, making a living as a gritty Hollywood studio fixer, handling industry scandals and secrets.
The newly revealed official logline reads:
“Brad Pitt returns to his Academy Award-winning role as Cliff Booth, only this time it’s 1977 and it’s a very different Hollywood. Directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino, the film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller.”

A brief production history: Why is David Fincher directing?
While The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is written by Quentin Tarantino, directorial duties fall to David Fincher, one of the most ubiquitous filmmakers of the last 3+ decades, renowned for his dark, gritty, and deeply psychological style. Some of his most celebrated movies include Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999), and The Social Network (2010).
Tarantino was originally down to helm the project, but dropped out of the duties in mid-2025, citing a lack of enthusiasm for returning to familiar ground; he wants his final movie to be a completely original project. Rather than leave the movie on the drawing board, he cited that David Fincher was the only director he was comfortable with taking the reins. Back when Tarantino was tied to direct, the movie was to be released at Sony Pictures, but Fincher signed an exclusivity deal at Netflix in 2020, meaning the film could only be made at Netflix.
“David Fincher is exclusive to Netflix. We were going to make the movie when Quentin [Tarantino] was directing it, but he decided that he didn’t want to do it and changed course,” Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman told Variety in August 2026. “The only other person that he was comfortable directing his script was David Fincher, and David Fincher was exclusive to Netflix, so we were not going to stand in anybody’s way.”
Fincher’s contrasting style to Tarantino makes the upcoming movie one of the most unique clashes of style in modern cinema: where we see Tarantino’s showers of Golden Hour glow, Fincher will no doubt add a more dour colour palette. What’s more, Fincher’s involvement marks the fourth time he has directed a film starring Brad Pitt. The other three are Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008).
In a recent interview with Brad Pitt, the actor told Esquire that he was the one who convinced Tarantino to show Fincher the Cliff Booth scripts. “Quentin gave me his blessing,” he said. “Finch and I were on a plane and I gave him the script, and by the time we landed he said, ‘I’m doing it.’ ”
While fans are left to ponder what a blend of the styles of Tarantino and Fincher will look like, actor Timothy Olyphant (who appeared in Once Upon a Time…) has previously commented on the project’s unique tone: “Well, the cool thing about the experience, and some of the stuff I’ve seen, is that both those things are very alive at the same time, and it’s such a cool mix. It is a Quentin movie through and through… But then the Fincher brings this… He puts such a stamp on it, the look of it, the feel of it, the music… It’s so clearly a Fincher film. And so to see those two things sort of bouncing off each other at once? It’s pretty cool.”
August 2026 Reshoots & Behind-the-Scenes Changes
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth began filming in July 2025 and wrapped principal photography in January 2026. However, the film has been absent from film festivals because it’s not fully complete yet. As first reported by The Playlist, it will undergo major reshoots in August 2026. This includes the re-construction of large sets.
The report also states that cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt will not be present in the reshoots due to scheduling conflicts with Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. As a result, Fincher has resorted to hiring long-time collaborator DP Jeff Cronenweth in the role. The two have most notably collaborated on Fight Club and The Social Network — although they have not worked together in over a decade.

Leonardo DiCaprio has ruled out rumours that he will return as Rick Dalton. In addition, Holt McCallany has also ruled himself out of appearing, despite being included in early casting articles. “Everybody thinks that I’m in the sequel to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ because I was listed in Variety as being part of the cast, but I’m not actually in that one,” he told the New York Post in 2025.
When does The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth land on Netflix?
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth lands in IMAX theaters globally for a two-week exclusive engagement starting November 25, 2026. It will subsequently find its permanent streaming home on Netflix worldwide on December 23, 2026.
If these dates sound familiar, that’s because the movie takes the slot that was previously held by Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which was ultimately pushed back to February 2027.
