Ryan Seacrest has spent decades in broadcasting. In fact, the American Idol alum has recently gotten involved in helping to find other talented hosts-in-the-making. Recently, he even shared some information about what makes a great host, even admitting to one mistake he often made early on.
Ryan Seacrest Has Hosted All Sorts Of Programs, From American Idol To Wheel Of Fortune
For many, Seacrest is known for hosting American Idol, having been part of the competition series since 2002. In addition, he took over hosting duties on Wheel of Fortune in 2024, taking over for Pat Sajak.
In addition, Seacrest has been involved with all sorts of ventures. Since 2004, for example, he has hosted On Air with Ryan Seacrest. He has also hosted seasonal events, including Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
In fact, Seacrest has been helping to search for the next generations of broadcasters through Colossal’s “Top Host” competition. Thanks to his own background, he has been sharing advice for other aspiring hosts.
Speaking with People, Seacrest opened up about something he wished he did less during his early days as a host. He shared, “I think when I started, I wanted to be perfect. You know, I was trying to prove myself and I wanted everything to be exactly right and no mistakes and I didn’t want to admit to not knowing certain things. I think that I sort of maybe focused too much on that early on.”
Seacrest Also Expressed Some Tips When It Comes To Conducting Interviews
Ultimately, the American Idol presenter expressed that you don’t need to know everything to be a great host. He shared, “For someone that’s starting out, it’s okay to not know everything and not be perfect. And many times, as I’ve seen over the years, those imperfections can become the most connectable qualities and some of the best moments in any content.”
Of course, Seacrest also weighed in on the qualities that can help someone in his line of work. He noted that it was important to be “curious, genuine, authentic.” He added, “I think that’s what makes for a great connection with people, whether it be audio, video or the combination.”
Seacrest also shared advice for conducting interviews. In particular, he thought listening, as well as reacting in the moment, were more important than talking. He shared, “They can really go with the flow and change their questions, change their follow-ups, pivot to any different direction.”
As the outlet noted, Colossal’s Top Host competition is searching nationwide for talent in audio and broadcasting. The 2026 winner is set to win $25,000, a professionally produced six-episode podcast series with iHeartRadio, and even an appearance on Seacrest’s radio show.
Seacrest himself expressed, “It only takes one break to change your career forever. That’s why I’m so excited about the Top Host competition, designed to find the next great voice and give rising creators a massive platform to be heard.”
