What To Know

  • Jack Cutmore-Scott joins Best Medicine Season 2 as Parker, who’s monitoring Martin after he was reported to the medical board … and will catch Louisa’s eye.
  • Josh Charles and executive producer Rodney Ferrell tease what to expect.

Oh, Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) is going to hate this. Not only is the doc under scrutiny in Best Medicine Season 2 (which premieres on September 22), after the medical board found out that he’d been letting his assistant Elaine (Cree) draw blood — due to the blood phobia he’s hiding from most — but the person coming to Port Wenn as a result of that is going to also have an impact on his personal life.

Jack Cutmore-Scott will guest star in multiple episodes as Parker, described as a charming and friendly guy who comes to Port Wenn as Martin’s professional “monitor” to oversee Martin’s medical compliance, TV Insider has learned. However, much to Martin’s further annoyance, in addition to his constant presence, Parker ends up having sparks with Louisa.

The first season of Best Medicine saw a constant push-pull and will they/won’t they dynamic between Charles and Abigail Spencer‘s characters. Just as he was about to confess his feelings to her in the finale, however, he overheard her speaking — but not the full conversation — with her ex-fiancé Mark (Josh Segarra), who offered to have a baby with her as friends. As a result, Martin turned to his ex-girlfriend, Eden (Eliza Coupe), who’s also Louisa’s fertility doctor (don’t you love that?). So, things were already complicated between Martin and Louisa.

Now, Parker’s going to just throw another wrench into those two (hopefully) getting together. When TV Insider was on set, executive producer Rodney Ferrell teased that it’s “a juicy, big arc of the season.”

As for Martin being under review by the medical board, “this monitor comes in that is  in his personal space, eating the food in his house, constantly watching him and making tons of noise while he’s trying [to work],” the EP said. “There is someone there sort of evaluating his role as a doctor through the first period of episodes. So, he’s definitely being checked and watched daily about what he’s doing.” As you’d expect, Martin “can’t stand that.”

Charles agreed. “He’s someone who I think is so vastly overqualified for this position, so the idea that because of what happened… he’s just feeling completely frustrated by it to have someone looking over his shoulder to do stuff that he’s more than capable of doing,” he explained. “But I also think he feels some shame about it because he’s trying to… They don’t know exactly why he did it, but I think they’re here and he’s dealing with it the best he can.”

Ferrell also revealed that there will be two monitors. The first “gives him all kinds of problems,” he teased. “She finally goes away, and he thinks that this might be over, but then a new one comes in, [Parker], and Louisa notices him.”
