Jenna Bush Hager was touched by Savannah Guthrie‘s words about motherhood on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle.

Guthrie filled in for Sheinelle Jones on the fourth hour of Today‘s Monday, September 14, episode. At the top of the show, Guthrie opened up about becoming a mother after 40 while chatting about Lady Gaga welcoming her first child with her fiancé, Michael Polansky.

“I had my babies in my 40s, which I think is a great time to have your kids. I mean, I didn’t plan it that way, but that’s how life turned out,” Guthrie stated. The Today anchor shares her daughter, Vale, and her son, Charley, with her husband, Michael Feldman.

“What are the benefits of that?” Bush Hager asked, noting that she gave birth to her son, Hal, a few years before turning 40. (She shares her three kids, including daughters Mila and Poppy, with her husband, Henry Hager.)

“I think it’s like anything, there are pluses and there are minuses,” Guthrie explained. “But I think being a little bit more stable in your career and stuff is wonderful, ’cause you’re not trying to juggle all the different things you’re trying to juggle when you’re in your 20s and 30s. I like to think there’s a little wisdom. But then there’s also, you know, you just get tired more quickly.”

Guthrie added that she’ll “never be over” becoming a mom later in life. “I still feel like just so profoundly lucky that I got to have my kids, and I was so late in life to do it. I mean, I had Charley and then turned 45 two weeks later.”

Bush Hager began to tear up at Guthrie’s comments. “I’m tired and an empath. It’s just like you never know when a tear is gonna sprout,” she quipped before adding, “I got to visit you with those babies. I got to come and sit on your couch when you were a brand-new mama.”

Guthrie recalled how she and Bush Hager spent their kids’ “early toddler years” together as neighbors. Bush Hager gushed to viewers, “Find a next-door neighbor who happens to be one of your best friends, or become best friends with your next-door neighbor, because then you can kind of raise your kids together.”

She continued, “We could be there for each other. I remember once I was late for the bus, and I called you, and I’m like, ‘Can you please get my kids, too?’ And it always made me feel more powerful to have you.”

Bush Hager began to cry again. “What is happening? Y’all, I need to go to time out,” she joked. Guthrie comforted her by stating, “It’s ’cause it’s beautiful.” Bush Hager concluded, “It’s ’cause I love you and I’m proud of you.”

Savannah’s new quotes about her kids come a few days after she made a rare mention of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, on Today. (Authorities have yet to name any suspects in the investigation into Nancy’s February abduction from her Arizona home.)

“I’ve never been to Ireland. My mother was Irish. Her grandmother, they were from Galway,” Savannah said on the Thursday, September 10, episode of Today while announcing the show’s upcoming special episode in Ireland. Savannah and the Today cast will broadcast the show live from County Kerry on October 16.
