There is a Dexter prequel series coming and a lot to know about it. After the original series led to a sequel that showed how Dexter Morgan finally died, now the franchise is going back to see him in his earlier days before the main series began. Now, the series has announced who will play the young Dexter.

Dexter Prequel Series Announces Cast
The new series is titled Dexter: Original Sin and it will air on Paramount+. Showtime is still producing the series, but the premium network is part of the Paramount family. Therefore, the new series will go to the streaming service, just like the sequel series did before.
The news broke on Friday that Showtime has signed the cast for the new series. Dexter Morgan, originally played by Michael C. Hall, has a new younger star for the prequel. Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone, The OA) will play a young Dexter Morgan.
Since this is a prequel, that means Dexter’s dad, Harry Morgan is still alive. James Remar played Harry on the original Dexter in flashback scenes. Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) has signed on to play Harry Morgan in the new prequel series. Finally, Molly Brown (Billions) has signed on to play Debra in the series as Jennifer Carpenter played Debra in the main series.
What Is Dexter: Original Sin About?
Dexter: Original Sin takes place in Miami in 1991, 15 years before the original series started. In this series, Dexter Morgan “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” according to the official synopsis.

The synopsis goes on to read:
“When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
It sounds like the series will show the rules and instructions that Harry taught his son before the original show began. While most fans know these rules, this will allow the series to show him learning them in action.
When Will New Series Premiere On Paramount+?
The original series aired from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime. More so, it earned three Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series and Michael C. Hall earned five nominations for Best Actor. The sequel series arrived in 2021 and showed Dexter’s son as an adult. However, it marked the end of the road for the title character.
There is no word yet on the release date for the new prequel series, but since it has cast its leads, there is a good chance it will shoot this year. That means a 2025 release date is in the cards but nothing is certain.
